The Indonesian government has promised to crack down on the growing number of people showing off dead or abused endangered animals on social media.Several cases have received national attention. In February, residents of the Sumatran village of Sibide posted pictures to Facebook of themselves posing with a dead Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae), whose dwindling population in the wild amounts to no more than a few hundred.

In Medan, the capital city of North Sumatra province there is misleading information saying fruit bat meat can cure asthma. This information has never been scientifically proven, but there are always people looking for fruit bat for food although the price is much more expensive than the price of beef. A bat with a weight of less than 1 kilogram can be sold at a price of IDR300,000 (USD23.00) per individual while beef costs less than IDR100,000 (US$7.00).

Shocking photographs show dolphins kept in horrific conditions in a small resort swimming pool in Bali. The four dolphins are kept in a chlorinated pool measuring 10m by 20m at a hotel at Keramas Beach on the Indonesian holiday island. The Wake Bali Dolphins tourist attraction charges visitors money for an 'exciting' dolphin experience, allowing people with swim with, hug and kiss the dolphins.
